The discovery of oil in ghana

Norwegian oil exploration company, Aker Energy has announced the discovery of what appears to be the biggest oil find in Ghana’s history to date off the western coast. The discovery occurred in the oil-rich Deepwater Tano area, which has already given rise to Ghana’s three oilfields already in production, – the Jubilee, TEN, and Sankofa Gyename fields. A Ghana-based private company and its local partners have discovered 1.5 billion barrels of oil in place offshore the West African country, the company Springfield E&P said on Wednesday.

Oil discovery has been of economic benefit to most developed countries while it has brought curse to the economies of most developing countries. Oil and gas exploration continued both onshore and offshore during this phase. 20 Nov 2019 Not only does it mark the first deepwater oil discovery made by an African oil company, but it could also be a bigger find than Ghana's Jubilee

The Jubilee field was discovered in June 2007. It is located 60km offshore between the Deepwater Tano and West Cape Three Points blocks in Ghana.

The Saltpond field, which is the first major oil field in Ghana was discovered and developed by Signal Amoco in 1970 and began producing oil in 1975. A total of about 3.47 million barrels of oil was produced and 14 billion cubic feet of gas was flared between 1978 and 1985.

According to the “Ghana Geological Survey Bulletin No. 40” exploration for oil and gas in Ghana started in 1896 in onshore Tano basin (Western Region). This was due to the presence of onshore oil and gas seepages found by early explorers in that area. These promotional efforts succeeded in attracting credible oil and gas companies such as Anadarko, Tullow Oil, Kosmos Energy, Eni etc. into Ghana. The discovery of significant oil and gas accumulations in 2007 and the commencement of production of the Jubilee field in November 2010 were the most significant events in Ghana's O&G sector in the Between 1898 to the late nineties an estimated hundred exploration wells had been drilled in Ghana with no significant discovery except for the Saltpond oil find in 1970. Our expert opinion on the recent oil discovery in Ghana is that it should be seen as a blessing that should serve as a catalyst to drive investment to the country.
