Recently I sold an old adze/axe combination tool and the buyer wrote me back that he had just started collecting tomahawks and was convinced it was an 18th C. French tomahawk. (They always think they are French.) This was despite the fact that I was a 25 year collector of antique tools and fifteen years collecting trade axes/tomahawks. The most obvious is the pike hawk, which has a blade on one side and a spike on the other. Because of this role, the main distinction from a historical stand point, between axes and tomahawks comes down to how the tool was used. It is generally accepted by collectors that a tomahawk is a trade axe which was used for fighting. The boarding axe is an interesting weapon as it was purpose built for working on ships. For such a ubiquitous item, there are very few (GAoP era) left today. I honestly had no idea the depth of history around this particular type of tomahawk in North America or that there was a class of tomahawks referred to as OTNA – for those used by Other Than Native Americans.
